Donald B. Rodgers, 86, of Red Oak, died Feb. 5, 2009 at the Red Oak Rehab & Care Center, Red Oak. Donald, the son of William B. and Maude (Murdock) Rodgers was born Oct. 16, 1922, at Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School in l941. Following graduation, he began working for Spurgeon’s Mercantile Company in Ames. Donald was united in marriage to Virginia K. Carroll on Sept. 7, 1942, in Lancaster, Mo. Donald entered the U.S. Army Air Force on Oct. 17, 1942, serving during WW II. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 20, 1946. In 1955 when Don was named manager of the Spurgeon’s store, the family moved to Red Oak. In 1964, Don then began his career in banking with Houghton State Bank. He worked for Houghton State Bank at the Elliott location, retiring after 20 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion Lorraine Post #67, Red Oak Lions Club and served many years on the Montgomery County Fair Board. Don was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Virginia Rodgers. Donald is survived by his children Greg (Linda) Rodgers of Red Oak and Debra (Russ) Boardman of Valley, Neb.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, H. Lynn Rodgers of Fairfield; and one sister, Jeanine Rodgers Paul of Marietta, Ill. Private family graveside service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Red Oak, with Rev. Fred Pilecki, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be given to Red Oak Senior Center. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with the family at www.sldfuneralhome.com.
