Coronavirus case reported at Southwest Valley

Southwest Valley superintendent Chris Fenster announced on Sept. 11 that the district had been informed that a member of the school district has tested positive for COVID-19.

This individual was no longer on campus, and the district was in the process of cleaning and sanitizing its facilities.

"Please know that we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff," Fenster said.

The individual who tested positive, on Sept. 8 is associated with Southwest Valley High School. The district is working with Taylor/Adams County Public Health to complete the contact tracing process. Anyone who has been in close contact with this individual will be notified by Taylor/Adams County Public Health. “Close contact” is defined as being within six feet for more than fifteen minutes.

"If you are not notified within 24 hours, it is likely that your child was not in close contact with the individual who tested positive and is not at higher risk than other students and staff. If you are notified, your child is at higher risk and you will be asked to quarantine your child for 14 days from their last day of exposure. These dates will be determined by Taylor/Adams County Public Health," Fenster advised.

The district was awaiting preliminary contact tracing results to determine the next steps, and said it would provide more information regarding potential impacts on instructional delivery as soon as possible.

"The safety of our students, staff, and community is our highest priority. We urge you to closely monitor your health as well as that of your children. If you develop symptoms of COVID-19 please contact your physician immediately. You may contact Taylor/Adams County Public Health, at (641) 322-6283, if you have additional questions about contact tracing, quarantine requirements, or COVID- 19. We will continue to monitor this situation and provide additional information as needed," commented Fenster.
