Corner Conference schools poised to start winter season

VILLISCA – The Blue Jays started practice for the 2009-10 season Monday as they look to defend their boys basketball Corner Conference title for the fourth straight year.

Villisca is returning two three-year starters, Timmy Myers and Chris Schaaf after loosing Greg Focht, Eli Cordon, and Aaron Williams from last season’s roster, who combined for 41.1 points per game.

“We have a lot of experience on this year’s team,” Villisca Head Coach Jim Obermeier said. “We have some pretty big shoes to fill from losing three starters from last year, but we’ve got some kids that are really stepping up.”

Stanton, Fremont-Mills, East Mills, and Sidney are also expected to make a run for the top of the conference this season.

On the girls side, Essex and Villisca are looking to battle it out after both ending the season 8-1 in the Corner Conference last year

The Trojanettes are bouncing back from last year with starters Joscelyn Coleman (led the team averaging 24 points per game), Tara Maher, and Annie Lindburg.

Villisca is returning only one starter, junior Courtney Auxier from last year.

Stanton is also hoping to get a piece of the pie, returning all five starters from their third-place team.
