Colleen Sands, 82

Colleen Sands, 82, of Red Oak, passed away May 18, 2011, at her home.

Georgia Colleen Sands was born to George Dewey and Georgia (Bailey) Vanderhoof on Feb. 2, 1929, in Red Oak.

Colleen lived her entire life in Red Oak, where she also attended school.

She was united in marriage to Wayne L. Sands on Jan. 14, 1948, in Hiawatha, Kan.

Colleen worked at the popcorn company and Green Parrot, and then for 30 years for Union Carbide Battery Company, retiring in the early 1980’s.

Colleen loved gardening and growing flowers in her yard. She enjoyed going to flea markets around the area and collected many garden statues for her yard.

She also had a large collection of salt dishes and Kewpie Dolls.

Colleen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne, on Feb. 27, 2008; five brothers, George, Robert, Bill, Keith and Darwin; and three sisters, Phyllis Lane, Joy Kite and Betty Martinsen.

Colleen is survived by her three children, Larry Sands of Red Oak, Ricky (Lois) Sands of Red Oak and Rita (Mark) Bienhoff of Villisca; five granddaughters, Beth (Tom) Griffeth, Becky Sands, Cathy Bush and special friend Richard Linfor, Dawn (Richie) Dozier, and Jody Sands, all of Red Oak; three great-grandchildren, Kya (Gilberto) Torres, Dakota Bush and Lexiz Moreno, all of Red Oak; two great-great-grandchildren, Marcus and Anali Torres of Red Oak; sister, Anna Mae Maple of Springfield, Mo.; brothers, Dewey (Ovella) Vanderhoof of Marionville, Mo., and Allen (Mary) Vanderhoof of Whitney, Texas; nieces, nephews and other relatives, along with a host of friends.

Visitation with the family present was on Friday evening at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home. Funeral service took place Saturday, May 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Sellergren-Lindell-DeMarce Funeral Home in Red Oak. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Brian Anderson officiating.
