Childcare crunch under discussion this week

Community members and business leaders are invited to two different workshops later this week regarding the child care shortage as part of a building community solutions collaborative.

The first meeting, targeting community leaders, employers, and organizations is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Montgomery County Family YMCA

Attendees will exchange innovative ideas and explore child care investments to support children’s healthy development, a stronger workforce and a competitive business environment, both in the short and long term. The collaborative bases efforts on community-led change. Through listening and learning, educating and engaging, the collaboration ultimately supports a stronger workforce and economy.

If anyone is unable to attend, they welcome a staff designee to participate as a representative.

RSVP by Oct. 16 directly to Shawnna Silvius, executive director of Montgomery County Development Corporation, at ssilvius@mcdevcorp.org or 712-370-6323. Leave a message that includes the name of persons attending and their place of business. Attendees of this meeting are also invited to participate in a second meeting held Oct. 18.

The second session is scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m., again at the Montgomery County Family YMCA.

The collaborative will exchange ideas and explore innovative ways to encourage child care investments to support healthy development of children, the workforce and the community. It is critical that existing and future center and family child care programs be key players in this planning process.

Attendees who can’t be present at the earlier session are invited to attend the evening session at the YMCA, and those that are unable to be present for the evening session are invited to be present at the session starting at 11 a.m.

Organizers say through listening and learning, educating and engaging, the collaboration ultimately supports a stronger workforce and economy, and they welcome participation in the Montgomery County solutions collaborative.

Anyone unable to attend either meeting can call Carol Jensen at 712-755-7381 to offer their input.

RSVP to the evening session by October 16 directly to Carol Jensen at cjensen@westcca.org, or 712-755-7381.

The meetings are sponsored by the Iowa Women’s Foundation, Montgomery County Development Corporation, Montgomery County YMCA, Bank of Iowa, and Child Care Resource & Referral
