A Charmed Life
It’s in-between sports seasons and spring break, yet some way, I’m still expected to fill a sports page.
The Bossman had a great idea to pass out NCAA brackets for those in the office to fill out.
“Great!” I think to myself. I mean, sure the Bossman will win because he knows more about sports than the staff combined, and well, he IS the boss. But, I will come in second because after all, I am the sports guy! This will be fun!
So, I fill out my bracket and chuckle as I over hear conversations in the hallway.
“I don’t get how you know who to pick in round two until after round one is over because the team I picked might not make it that far.”
I’m smiling as I sit in my office.
“I’ve never seen a bracket filled out with numbers before,” I hear Bossman say.
And this time, I admit, I laughed out loud.
“It’s almost too easy,” I think.
THEN, to boost my flailing ego even more, I had a co-worker ask who I picked to win it all.
Beaming with the knowledge that “Chandler” is actually asking my advice, I confidently answered, “Duke, of course!”
I proceeded to make a copy of my picks because I just “know” someone will steal my winning entry, and I needed a copy at home to use my colored pens on for corrections and updates.
As many know, Duke failed me. And I have done the walk of shame down the hallway to the sports office ever since. Right past “Chandler’s” office, who by the way, admits to knowing little about any sport and is WAY ahead of the sports guy in the contest.
Oh, well. What did I really expect? I mean, seriously, I’ve been a Los Angeles Rams fan since 1981. My great predictions have failed me many times before.
I predict that will be a streak that continues
