Boy Scouts of America to celebrate 101st birthday

The week of Feb. 5-11, marks the 101st birthday of the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouting teaches youth values that last a lifetime, including honesty, helping others, character development and respect for the law. Scouts learn these values while participating in fun, family-friendly activities.

Scouting began in the United States in 1910, with the first locally recorded scouting movement taking place in 1918, as the Omaha Council. In 1965, the Mid-America Council was formed through a merger between the Covered Wagon Council and the Southwest Iowa Council. The Mid-America Council then merged with the Prairie Gold Council in 2000.

The Boy Scouts Mid-America Council serves youth in 58 counties in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. The Council is headquartered in Omaha with a satillite service center in Sioux City. It is staffed by more than 9,585 volunteers.

Mid-America Council will celebrate Scout Anniversary Week through encouraging all Scouts of all ages to thank those who support and help to keep scouting strong.
