Bedford upsets Viqueens

Thursday night, the Stanton Viqueens ended the season with a 16-6 record, after losing to the Lady Bulldogs in a first round upset, 45-36.
The Viqueens went on a 9-0 run to end the first quarter 13-6. But the Lady Bulldogs began the second quarter with a 10-0 run to take the lead with only two minutes left in the half.
The Queens pulled through and regained the lead to head into the halftime 19-16.
The third quarter began with Stanton making eight unanswered points before the Lady Bulldogs took off again and went on a 12-0 run to end the third and begin the fourth quarter. With just four minutes left in the game, the score was tied at 31.
The Lady Bulldogs sank two free-throws, and senior Viqueen Jody Vanderholm fouled out with 1:49 left in the game.
The Queens were down by three, and the Lady Bulldogs sank another free-throw, taking the score to 36-32 in favor of Bedford.
The Lady Bulldogs continued to hit the hoop, while the Viqueens struggled.
“We got good looks and had several shots go half way down and rim out,” coach Dave Snyder said. “Verse the packed-in zone, we had to hit our share of those shots. The cold outside shooting did not allow things to open up inside.”
The Lady Bulldogs scored 10 points in the final minute of play, compared to the Viqueens’ four.
Chelsea Weis recorded a double-double in her final game of high school roundball, scoring 13 points and pulling down 13 boards.
Ally Focht added eight points and 10 rebounds to end her high school career.
Freshman Kami Tibben grabbed nine rebounds and had three steals.
“In the end, we had a great season, one that nobody wanted to see end,” Snyder said. “The foundation the seniors left is one that future teams can build off of,” Snyder said.
Stanton finished the season at 16-6.
