Athen records 1K kills, digs in Tiger VB loss

The Red Oak Tigers lost to St. Albert in five sets Thursday, 25-27, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-5.  
The highlight of the game came right away in the first set when Sierra Athen recorded her 1,000th career kill. Several plays later, Athen recorded her 1,000th career dig.
Athen recorded a double-double in the game with 17 kills, 30 digs, two blocks, and five aces.
Ellie Rengstorf and Hannah Vial recorded double-doubles, also. Rengstorf posted 25 assists, 16 digs, and one ace, while Vial added four kills, 24 assists, 12 digs, two blocks, and an ace.
Shawna Baldwin added two kills, one dig; Kate Carlson nine digs, one ace; Chloe DeVries one assist; Chloe Johnson 11 kills, five digs; Syd Streicher 23 digs, one ace; Sophie Walker 16 kills, five digs, two blocks; Zoey Welter one dig; Allie West one kill.
Freshmen
Due to injuries on the St. Albert’s ninth grade team, the Red Oak freshman team played St. Albert’s JV, losing 25-20.
Kamryn Wendt led with five kills, one assist, and two digs; Ryleigh Patterson four kills, four digs; Ashlynn Bentley two kills, two assists, one dig; DeVries two kills, 10 assists, two digs; Lexy Fridolph one kill; Abbey Jones one kill, two assists, four digs.
Clarinda
Last Tuesday, the Tigers took Clarinda in four sets 25-17, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19.
The Tigers began the night with an eight-point run to lead 16-8, and held the Cardinals from closing the gap.
The Tigers dominated the second set, leading by up to nine points. The Cardinals made a late run and got within three, but the Tigers’ momentum pulled off the win.
The Cardinals found their rhythm in the third set, taking a quick lead of 8-2. Red Oak pulled within two points several runs, but could not take the lead the entire set.
The Tigers grabbed a quick lead in the fourth set and were up 11-5 before the Cardinals were able to pull together a run.
 Back-to-back Sophie Walker kills at points 14 and 15 seemed to spark the Tigers, who made two more big runs to clinch the set and the game.
Athen recorded 21 kills, eight digs and one block to lead the Tigers.
Johnson had 17 kills, one dig; Peterson one dig; Walker eight kills, two digs, one ace; Vial five kills, 27 assists, three digs; West two kills, one dig; Baldwin one kill, two digs; Rengstorf 22 assists, five digs, one ace; Streicher 16 digs, two aces; Carlson five digs, three aces.
JV
Red Oak JV lost to Clarinda 27-25, 27-25.
Welter had five kills, one assist; Maddie Wendt four kills, one ace, one dig; West four kills, one ace, 10 digs; Libby Mensen two kills; Averie Hascall two kills, four assists, two digs, one block; Emily Carbaugh one kill; Syd Connell six assists, one ace, four digs; Rengstorf five assists, one ace, five digs; Macy Walker two aces, four digs; Natalia Tolosa one dig; and Trinity Peterson 13 digs.
Freshmen
The Tigers downed Clarinda 25-9, 25-14.
DeVries had 17 assists, four digs, three ace serves; Patterson had eight kills; Jones had four digs, two aces; Fridolph three digs; K. Wendt three kills, three digs, two aces; Hannah Gray three kills, and Bentley one kill, one dig, seven aces.
Tri-Center tourney
The Tigers competed in the Tri-Center tournament Saturday, Oct. 1, and ended the day in second place, going 4-1.
“The Tigers rolled through much of the day, and had great success running our offense as reflected by a very balanced day,” Montgomery said. “I felt as though our girls were very focused the entire day on finishing the day in a stronger place than when we started, as is the goal every time that we step out on the court.
“Our reserve players also came in and had a successful day, contributing in almost every set of the day.”
Red Oak defeated Fremont-Mills 21-6, 21-11; Stanton 21-11, 21-8; Lawton Bronson 21-9, 21-10; and Westwood Sloan 21-17, 21-13.
The lone loss came to Tri-Center 21-18, 9-21, 15-12.
Athen had 40 kills, 33 digs, two blocks, two aces; Johnson 35 kills, two blocks; Walker 28 kills, nine blocks, two aces; Vial 10 kills, 54 assists, two blocks, two aces; Baldwin seven kills, five blocks; West four kills, three blocks; Rengstorf 48 kills, two aces; DeVries 10 kills; Streicher 35 digs, 10 aces; Carlson 12 digs; two aces; Averie Hascall one kill; and Abbey Jones one ace.
