Allan Hines, 77

Allan Hines, 77, of Elliott, passed away Feb. 21, 2012, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Allan Eugene Hines was born to Clair and Hilda (Andersen) Hines June 5, 1934, in Noble Township. When Allan was two-years-old, his mother passed away. Several years later, his father married Elizabeth Frank.

Allan attended country school near his home and then graduated from Griswold High School with the class of 1951. After graduation, he began farming with his dad.

Allan married Charlene Hoffman Sept. 11, 1955.

In January of 1957 he entered the Army and was stationed in Germany. Following his service he returned home and he and Charlene moved west of Grant where they raised their three daughters. He served as township clerk, was on the cemetery board and was a church usher.

Allan loved farming and was a good steward of the land. Feeding cattle was a highlight of farm life and there was nothing he enjoyed better than to see steers lined up to the feed bunk eating. He also loved to travel, and he and Charlene took many trips with their dear friends Merlin and Jan Vetter. He has been in 48 states, Mexico and numerous countries in Europe. He planned to go to Hawaii when the bridge was built. He also liked to drive fast, especially in Wyoming and the salt flats in Utah. His best ride was 130 mph in Wyoming.

Some of his favorite quotes were “If you don’t have time to do it right the first time, when are you going to have time to do it over?” and “The only thing worse than having too much to do is not having enough to do.”

He is preceded in death by his parents and step mother.

Allan is survived by his wife, Charlene, of Elliott; three daughters, Cheryl Rand, of Missouri Valley, Connie (Gary) Frink, of Emerson, and Cindy (Joel) Conn, of Pleasant Hill; grandchildren, Katie (Tony) Knight, of Fort Calhoun, Neb., Jolene (Johnathan) Troidl, of Grandview, Mo., Derek Frink, of Omaha, Allyson Conn, of West Des Moines, and Skylar Conn, of Ames; great-grandson, Tyson Knight, of Fort Calhoun; sister, Marjorie (Tom) Froom, of Arlington, Texas; brother-in-law, Robert Hoffman, of Staten Island, N.Y; many nieces and nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Noble Center United Methodist Church South of Lyman. Open visitation was at the Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold on Friday. The family was present to receive friends at the Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold is in charge of arrangements.
