After beating South Page 65-45, Stanton stumbles in Shenandoah
SHENANDOAH—The Stanton Vikings basketball team lost to the Shenandoah Mustangs Friday night, 68-45.
Shenandoah jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the first quarter. Stanton didn’t score a point until 3:27 left in the first quarter. The Vikings closed the gap the rest of the quarter and got to within eight points, finishing the first quarter trailing 13-8.
Stanton scored three points to open the second quarter and was down 13-11. Both sides traded baskets and the Vikings were still down two, but a three-point play by Shenandoah kept them ahead the rest of the way. The Mustangs went into halftime with the 22-18 lead.
Shenandoah jumped out to a commanding lead in the third quarter as they went on a 13-4 run. After leading by as much as 16, Shenandoah started the fourth quarter on top 46-31.
Shenandoah had another 20-plus point fourth quarter to sustain their lead and go on to win the game.
Shayne Larson and Jeff Marshall led the Vikings in scoring with 11 points each. Marshall’s 12 rebounds gave him a double-double.
Greg Focht co-led in rebounding, as he finished with 12 as well and was two points shy of his own double-double. Brent Hanson also finished the night with eight points.
The Vikings defeated South Page, last Tuesday night, 65-45. Stanton scored 36 points in the first half and cruised the rest of the way.
Larson led the Vikings in scoring with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Marshall and Focht each had double-doubles for the night. Marshall scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Focht also scored 11 points, but secured 11 rebounds.
Stanton plays conference rival Villisca Tuesday night at Villisca. Friday night, the Vikings are home to play Essex.
