4th Graders Camp overnight at Springbrook Education Center

Red Oak 4th Grade students attended school as usual Monday, April 25, but did the unusual when they took a field trip to Springbrook Educational Center near Guthrie Center, Iowa, and stayed overnight.

The Iowa DNR staffs the Springbrook facility, which gave students the opportunity to participate in several activities taught by scientists and experts during their stay.

The 4th graders learned how to band birds for tracking purposes and record research data, dissect owl pellets to determine what owls eat, and how to tie flies for lure fishing. They also made plaster animal prints.

Some other topics the children learned about were archery, survival shelter building, frogs, animal adaptations, kayaking, fishing, scavenger hunting, and stream tables.

The students will use what they learned during their field trip at school in their classes.

Deb Karwal, Montgomery County Naturalist, the Montgomery County Soil and Water Board, the Montgomery County Pheasants Forever Organization, the Red Oak Board of Directors, the Washington School Staff and the parents of the students made the trip possible.
